Serving board material of Pure Oak Wood

Oak is one of the best-known types of wood. In general, oak is strong and hard, yet reasonably easy to work with and finish.

There is a big difference between one oak wood and another. Among the best-known trade groups are

  • European Oak: This is the traditional oak wood, used for making classic oak furniture and sculptures, among other things. Within Europe, a wide variety of qualities can be recognized. Distinctions are made between Spessart oak, straight-grained and fine-grained; French oak, harder and darker in color; and the beautiful but rare Slavonian oak, usually in long lengths without knots or blemishes.
  • American white oak: is lighter in color.
  • American red oak: is pinker in color, softer, coarser in grain.
  • Japanese oak, fine grain, light in color.

‘Dark oak’ is often not a separate type of wood but is usually the result of a treatment. It also discolors to blue where it comes into contact with iron, due to the present tannin.

On the other hand, it's not true that all wood that comes from an oak is therefore oak. A well-known exception is the holm oak. This yields very different, very hard and heavy wood called lignum vitae. Woods that do resemble oak somewhat are ash and elm, but they lack the beautiful ‘fleck’ that is so characteristic of oak.

Oak is suitable for all sorts of purposes, including decorative applications such as doors and furniture. However, it must be protected and preserved underwater. It is also processed into veneer layers for gluing furniture.
