Material 1 tray serving beechwood
For the production of the serving tray, only beech wood was used. Beech, or beechwood, is a type of wood, one of the most important hardwoods for industry in the Netherlands and Belgium. It is the wood of the beech tree, a tree species common throughout almost all of Europe. In parts of Asia, Japan, and eastern North America, species from this same genus occur, the wood of which has approximately the same material properties.
The wood's color varies, depending on its origin, from whitish to light yellow-brown. There is little difference between the heartwood and the sapwood. The medullary rays are visible as dark brown flecks on quarter-sawn surfaces, and as the characteristic teardrop-shaped pattern on plain-sawn surfaces. The grain is fine, and the wood is easy to work and turn. It is a tough, solid, and fairly hard type of wood, which is however not very durable, is poorly resistant to weathering, and warps quickly.
Beech wood is sometimes steamed, which makes it more stable and less prone to warping due to moisture or temperature fluctuations. Steaming gives the wood a light red to pink color; however, it does make it more brittle.
