Why Father's Day?

Father's Day, a special day honoring fathers, emphasizes fatherhood and the crucial role fathers play in raising and caring for their children. In the Netherlands, the celebration takes place on the third Sunday of June, while Belgium celebrates it on the second Sunday of June. This holiday originated from the previously celebrated Mother's Day. It is an occasion on which fathers are put in the spotlight and their meaningful contribution to families is recognized.

The History of Father's Day

In 1909, Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd from Washington took the initiative for Father's Day. Her goal was to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and widower after his wife's death during the birth of their sixth child. As her daughter grew older, the desire to emphasize her father's courage and resilience grew. This desire was inspired by Anna Jarvis, the originator of Mother's Day, which had been introduced a year earlier.

On June 19, 1910, Spokane, Washington, celebrated the very first Father's Day. Despite support from President Calvin Coolidge in 1924, the idea met resistance in the male-dominated U.S. Congress. Congress was reluctant to recognize a day specifically aimed at honoring men. Finally, in 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon, Father's Day received official recognition in the United States.

The Netherlands originally celebrated Father's Day in October starting in 1937. In 1948, at the initiative of the Dutch Association of Men's Fashion Retailers, it was decided to move Father's Day to the third Sunday of June, aligning the Dutch celebration of this special day with the American tradition.
